THEATRE PERFORMANCE
Theatre I Beginning No prerequisite required. This course introduces students to the basic aspects of movement, vocal expression, and ensemble work. Class activities include improvisation, vocal development, playwriting, theatre history, and solo/collaborative presentations in acting and theatre production. Theatre II Intermediate Theatre I prerequisite required or middle school theatre course (beginning 2024-2025). Students continue to develop vocal and physical acting skills (including in-depth character analysis and development) and playwriting. Various acting styles are introduced.. Students focus on the history and development of theatre in Western Civilization. Class activities include more challenging improvisation, vocal development, children's theatre, solo/collaborative presentations in acting and theatre production. Theatre III Accomplished Honors Theatre II prerequisite required or Theatre I plus audition and invitation for director. Students apply acting, directing, playwriting, and production skills developed in previous theatre training. Students produce polished and complex works for an audience. Additional acting styles are introduced and developed. Participating in after-school rehearsals and performances is expected. Theatre IV Advanced Honors Theatre III prerequisite required. Students advance acting, directing, playwriting, and production skills developed in previous theatre training. Students assume leadership roles in the production of polished and complex works for an audience. Various acting and directing styles are practiced. Success at the honors level requires rigorous study, excellence in performance, and extensive knowledge of all areas of theatre including production and directing, and an in-depth study of a variety of dramatic literature. Students are encouraged to explore a variety of theatrical styles and work with others to produce experimental, culturally significant works of art. Participation in after-school rehearsals and performances is expected. |
TECHNICAL THEATRE
Technical Theatre I Beginning No prerequisite required. Students explore the various aspects of design and production for theatre. Areas of study may include scenery, lighting, sound, makeup, properties, costumes, and stage management. Technical Theatre II Intermediate Technical Theatre I prerequisite required. Students develop technical skills through design and production. Technical support for school productions requires participation in after-school rehearsals and performances. Technical Theatre III Accomplished Honors Technical Theatre II prerequisite required. Recommended prerequisite(s): Technical Theatre – Intermediate Students who have demonstrated a high skill level in technical theatre can continue to study various areas of technical theatre by focusing on more advanced design and production skills. Students are expected to participate in after-school rehearsals and performances as well as provide technical support for school-based events Technical Theatre IV Advanced Honors Technical Theatre III Honors prerequisite required. Students who have demonstrated a high skill level in technical theatre can continue to study various areas of technical theatre by focusing on more advanced design and production skills. OTHER
Express Yourself: Art and Inclusion No prerequisite required. This course invites high school students (grades 10-12, including OSC & ECS students) to explore the performing arts—music, dance, and theatre—while fostering an inclusive environment. Students will serve as peer mentors, collaborating with instructors and special education students to design and deliver creative lessons that promote self-expression and creativity. Students will gain practical experience in teaching, lesson planning, and leadership, with a focus on inclusivity and adaptability. This program uniquely blends artistic exploration with peer mentorship, preparing students for future careers in education, arts leadership, or community recreation while meeting NC Standard Course of Study objectives. |
